Nephi and Delta

Nephi, Utah

The quaint, rural town of Nephi, Utah, is located in Juab County roughly 40 miles south of Provo, and it has a storied history. Nephi was founded in 1851 by Mormon pioneers and located at the mouth of Salt Creek Canyon, which is why it was originally referred to as the town of Salt Creek. Farming and livestock were the primary industries in Nephi, and almost 200 years later, agriculture continues to play a major role in the local economy today. In the later part of the 19th century, a prominent salt mine would be built up the canyon and the railroad would come through town, leading to a thriving main street with all manner of shops, restaurants, and other businesses. This bustling commercial scene earned Nephi the nickname “Little Chicago.”

Today, Nephi is a small town with a population of around 7,000 people. Residents love its family-friendly atmosphere, small-town safety and security, and tight-knit community. There are always things going on, including many community events and holiday celebrations.

Delta, Utah

Delta, Utah, is another small community with a population of around 3,600 people. It is the largest city in Millard County, Utah, and was originally founded for its location along the railroad line between Salt Lake City, Utah, and Los Angeles, California. It’s also located where the river delta of the massive Lake Bonneville would have sat in ancient times.

Delta residents consider the town’s rural and isolated location a benefit, as there’s easy access to Utah’s West Desert and the many rockhounding and fossil-digging sites throughout. Delta is also located near Little Sahara Sand Dunes and is considered the gateway to Great Basin National Park, located just over the state border in Nevada. Although Great Basin National Park flies under the radar compared to southern Utah’s big five parks (Zion, Bryce Canyon, Arches, Canyonlands, and Capitol Reef), it’s a beautiful destination that offers stunning mountain vistas, unique plants, and wildlife (including the ancient bristlecone pine tree), and interesting caves to explore.

Within the community itself, there are plenty of public events, including celebrations for July 4th, Christmas, the Snow Goose Festival, the Miss Delta program, the Easter egg hunt, and more. In 2007, Delta even set the Guinness World Record for the World’s Largest Bunny Hop, when 3841 people participated.
